In “Natural Law,” Rushdoony argues that what many Christians assume to be a Biblical concept has, in fact, been repeatedly reshaped by Greek philosophy into an anti-Christian doctrine that exalts human reason or the state as the source of law. Rooted in Platonic and Aristotelian thought, natural law came to mean “right reason,” enforced by philosopher-kings or embodied in the state, rather than God’s revealed law grounded in creation and covenant. This shift paved the way for the French Revolution, Marxism, and modern statism, where sovereignty, justice, and rights are defined by man instead of God. Rushdoony insists that a truly Christian approach is not “natural law” but creation law, known rightly only through Scripture and submission to God’s enscriptured Word. When law is detached from God’s authority, it becomes an instrument of elitism, tyranny, and crisis; only when law flows from the sovereign Creator can justice, science, and society stand on a firm foundation.
