The second Beatitude, “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted,” does not speak of sorrow in general, but of a specific and holy mourning that follows poverty of spirit a grief over our sin, rebellion, and spiritual barrenness before God. When we truly see ourselves in the light of God’s holiness, we recognize that our lives are naturally weed patches rather than cultivated gardens: evil grows easily, while obedience and goodness require painful effort and divine grace. Like Isaiah crying, “I am a man of unclean lips,” this mourning arises only after we have first seen the Lord, for self-knowledge begins with the knowledge of God. Such mourning is blessed because it is not despair but the beginning of transformation; God wounds in order to heal, exposes our poverty in order to enrich us, and breaks the soil of our hearts so that new life may grow. This grief over sin is therefore the doorway to comfort, because the same God who shows us our emptiness also assures us that He will root out the weeds, sow His seed, and bring forth a harvest unto His glory.
