One of the most subtle and dangerous paths to failure is the insistence on standing rigidly on one’s rights. It appears virtuous and morally upright, yet Scripture exposes it as a sure road to frustration, lovelessness, and inner defeat. A man who demands his rights may indeed obtain them, but he gains them at the cost of peace, fellowship, and love. Christ never commanded His people to fight for their rights; instead, He called them to surrender them to go the second mile. God Himself does not deal with us on the basis of His rights, for if He did, none could stand. Instead, He went far beyond the second mile, extending mercy through Jesus Christ, who bore our guilt at the cross. Those who walk with Christ leave their rights there and live on the ground of grace. Refusing to stand on our rights is not weakness but participation in God’s mercy, and only on that road does life lead home, with the faithful Guide who promises, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
