ARN #253: Savage Intentions (June 1995)

In this episode, Arn Anderson discusses the explosive buildup to WCW's 1995 Great American Bash! We dive into the aftermath of the brutal attack on Angelo Poffo by Ric Flair and Arn Anderson after Hogan and Savage's tag team victory over Flair and Vader. Arn shares his insights on WCW's decision to shift focus to Savage vs. Flair for the main event and his views on the impact of keeping Hogan and Vader off the Bash card. Did this decision affect the fans' perception of the Hogan-Vader rivalry? Or was the pivot to Savage and Flair a stronger draw?

Arn also talks about his own match with The Renegade for the Television Title, revealing what he thinks about Renegade’s controversial debut as WCW's Ultimate Warrior-like character and why this creative direction may have been doomed from the start. Plus, Arn reflects on the introduction of Kevin Sullivan’s Dungeon of Doom—a heel faction targeting Hulkamania with familiar faces like Kamala, Shark, and Zodiak.

We’re also taking a look at Arn’s New Japan tour alongside Steve Austin, and the “what ifs” of Austin’s injury on that tour that ultimately led him to ECW and WWF. Could Austin have broken out as a top star in WCW? And what would wrestling history look like if “Stone Cold” had never come to be?

To cap things off, Arn breaks down the Great American Bash 1995 card: Sting vs. Meng, Harlem Heat’s tag match, the clash between Flair and Savage, and, of course, his own unforgettable bout against The Renegade. Was this event a missed opportunity for WCW, or did it deliver for fans in the end?

Join us as we get the inside scoop on the big names, key rivalries, and behind-the-scenes decisions that shaped WCW in 1995!
