Why do people in business increasingly say “sounding board” instead of simply asking for advice? In this episode, I explore my discomfort with the Japanese business buzzword kabeuchi, literally “hitting a wall.” Behind this seemingly harmless expression may lie something revealing about modern work culture: we want other people to help organize our thoughts, but we do not necessarily want their opinions, disagreement, or criticism. I discuss the hidden cost of using someone else’s time, why AI may actually be a more ethical sounding board, and what this trend tells us about our relationship with other people.
