This episode details the decades-long investigation into the 1964 kidnapping and murder of nine-year-old Marise Chiverella in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. After early leads—including a false confession and a suspect's suicide—failed to produce results, the case remained unsolved for over half a century. The breakthrough finally occurred in 2007 with the recovery of DNA evidence from the victim's clothing, though a database match was not immediately found. A major turning point arrived in 2020 when a student genealogist, Eric Schubert, volunteered to help investigators build complex family trees to narrow down potential suspects. Through his research and additional DNA testing of relatives, police identified James Paul Forte as the perpetrator. Although Forte had died in 1980, authorities exhumed his body to confirm a definitive forensic match, finally providing the Chiverella family with the truth after 58 years.
