In 1994, a seemingly accidental vehicle plunge into the Mississippi River in Ontario resulted in the death of Barbara Longfield. Despite his claims of a harrowing escape, her husband, Gary Samuels, quickly became the focus of a homicide investigation led by suspicious local authorities. Investigators uncovered a massive insurance fraud scheme involving twenty-seven different policies and used hypothermia experiments to debunk the husband's timeline of events. Specialized photographic reconstruction eventually proved the truck was driven into the water at a speed inconsistent with an accident. These combined forensic efforts revealed a premeditated murder motivated by extreme greed. Consequently, Samuels was convicted of first-degree murder and remained imprisoned until his death.
