During the 1940s and 1950s, a British serial killer named John Christie murdered at least eight individuals, including his own wife, while concealing their remains inside his London apartment at 10 Rillington Place. Prior to his crimes being uncovered, Christie's neighbor, Timothy Evans, was wrongfully convicted and executed for the murders of his own wife and infant daughter after Christie offered to perform an illegal abortion and subsequently framed him. Although Christie used his background as a veteran and former police officer to evade initial suspicion, multiple victims were eventually discovered hidden throughout his home years later during a routine kitchen inspection. Following his confession to the extra murders during his trial, Christie was hanged for his crimes in 1953 by the exact same executioner who had killed Evans. Decades later, mounting public pressure and official reviews culminated in Evans receiving a posthumous royal pardon in 1966 to correct one of the most catastrophic miscarriages of justice in modern British history.
