Jose Escalera was convicted and sentenced to death for the premeditated murders of his pregnant partner, Tanya Wise, and their unborn child, Josiah. Initially, investigators suspected other men, but DNA evidence ultimately proved Escalera was the father and placed him at the crime scene. Prosecutors also uncovered surveillance footage from a garbage truck showing Escalera casually plotting the horrific killings to protect his marriage. Despite a defense strategy that attempted to shift blame to his wife, the jury deliberated for less than an hour before finding him guilty on both counts. Following emotional victim impact statements from Tanya's mother and son, the jury ultimately returned a sentence of death.
