In 1984, the brutal murders of Brenda Lafferty and her infant daughter by brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty shook American Fork, Utah, later inspiring a well-known book and television adaptation. Raised in a strict environment with extreme anti-government views, the brothers grew increasingly radical, embraced polygamy, and were eventually excommunicated from the LDS Church. After joining a breakaway fundamentalist faction, Ron began claiming he received direct commands from God, specifically targeting Brenda for her progressive lifestyle and for allegedly encouraging Ron's wife to leave him. Driven by these fanatical beliefs, the brothers broke into the apartment, murdered Brenda and her baby, and attempted to flee before being captured in Nevada. Although they planned additional killings, law enforcement arrested them, ending a violent rampage rooted in religious extremism and perceived vengeance.
