In August 2017, an 83-year-old animal lover named Peter Wrighton was brutally murdered while walking his dogs in a woodland area near East Harling, Norfolk. The vicious and unprovoked attack sparked a massive police investigation that relied heavily on public appeals and witness descriptions to piece together the tragic events. Authorities ultimately arrested Alexander Palmer, a former soldier suffering from severe mental health issues who harbored a distinct hatred for dog walkers. Despite warnings from Palmer's family regarding his weapon collection and violent fantasies, systemic failures within mental health services allowed him to remain in the community. Following a swift trial in early 2018, Palmer was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 28 years.
