Faced with the certainty of his DNA match, Smirk voluntarily confessed to the brutal stabbing, citing a dark psychological impulse and his past interest in the occult. Throughout the interrogation, he displayed a chilling lack of remorse for the victim’s family while describing how he used his military training to carry out the attack. Smirk ultimately pleaded guilty to the decades-old murder and received a 70-year prison sentence in 2025.
