October 4: ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI: Rebuild My Church

St. Francis of Assisi gave up his father's wealth to kiss the hands of a leper and rebuild a crumbling Church.

Born into a prosperous merchant family, Francis walked away from comfort after an encounter with a leper on the road changed him completely, and a voice from a crucifix told him to repair God's Church. He begged for his food, cared for the sick with his own hands, and eventually bore the wounds of Christ himself after weeks of prayer and fasting on Mount La Verna.

"Until now I have called Pietro di Bernardone my father, but from now on I can freely say: Our Father, who art in heaven."
