September 9: ST. PETER CLAVER: A Slave of the Slaves Forever

St. Peter Claver climbed into slave ships in Cartagena harbor before almost anyone else dared go near them.

For forty years, whenever a slave ship arrived in Cartagena, Colombia, Peter Claver was there — bringing food, water, and medical care, learning African languages so people could hear about God's love in their own tongue, and baptizing an estimated 300,000 people over his lifetime.

"Peter Claver, servant of the Africans forever."
