Defense One reports the U.S. Army plans a new command to streamline autonomous warfare acquisition, aiming to consolidate requirements, testing, and contracting. The move aligns with Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks' Replicator initiative to field thousands of attritable autonomous systems within two years. It also dovetails with efforts by the Defense Innovation Unit under Director Doug Beck and the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office to scale commercial AI. The Army has tested robotic vehicles, small uncrewed aircraft, autonomy kits, and counter-drone systems at Project Convergence and Fort Irwin. Acquisition tools include middle-tier pathways, Other Transaction Agreements through consortia such as NSTXL and SOSSEC, and SBIR and STTR on-ramps. Companies should prepare for CMMC 2.0 cybersecurity requirements, export controls, modular open systems, and data rights negotiations as programs move from pilots to production.
