As kids head back to the classroom, families are transitioning from the more relaxed routines of summer to the structure of a new school year. For many households, that also means taking a fresh look at screen time, gaming and other digital habits. The start of the school year offers parents and caregivers an opportunity to reset expectations and establish healthy digital routines that support sleep, homework, learning and downtime. Digital parenting and education experts are available to share practical strategies families can put into place as the school year gets underway, including:Pair parental controls with conversation: Built-in controls, including screen-time and spending limits, can give parents useful guardrails for their child's online experience. But those tools can be most effective when paired with ongoing conversations that help kids develop self-regulation and responsible digital habits.Focus on how kids are spending their screen time: Not all screen time is the same. Gaming can provide opportunities for learning, creativity and collaboration with friends, especially when players become creators on platforms like Roblox. Through Roblox Kids and Select accounts, families can also discover educational experiences in the Learning Hub covering a variety of real-world topics and skills.Understand your child's digital world: Parents can explore the platforms and games their children use rather than simply monitoring from the sidelines. On Roblox, parents can get in the game themselves and use resources such as Family Zone, an immersive game on the Roblox platform, to better understand their child's online experience.Help kids build important life skills: Digital boundaries can be used to teach children how to manage their time, take ownership of their routines and navigate online spaces responsibly.Create consistency between home and school: Aligning digital rules at home with school expectations can help kids understand when it's time to focus on learning and when there's time for gaming and other leisure activities. Dr. Elizabeth Milovidov is the Senior Director of Global Parental Advocacy at Roblox where she focuses on building partnerships and programs to help equip parents and caregivers with the tools to help their families navigate Roblox and the digital world.
