Financial institutions depend heavily on open-source software, yet many of the libraries and frameworks underpinning trading, risk, data processing, and fintech infrastructure receive little or no funding from the companies using them. EXANTE's €1 million Gecko Fund aims to address that gap by supporting existing open-source projects with grants ranging from €10,000 to €150,000. Its first grant went to Kryo, a Java serialization framework maintained by two people since 2009.
