Fearn, a San Francisco patent law firm built around its own AI models rather than the billable hour, launched today with $5.5 million from Kindred Ventures, a16z speedrun, Designer Fund and Essence VC. It drafts a non-provisional patent application for a flat $9,000 including government fees, against a conventional range of $18,000 to $40,000, files provisionals in about three business days and refunds the drafting fee if an application it prosecutes wins no claims at all. Founders Han Kim (formerly of Morrison & Foerster) and Angela Gao (a Caltech PhD in AI) say work that takes a conventional firm 30 to 40 attorney hours takes 30 minutes of attorney time on FearnOS, their graph-based drafting system. The firm reports gross margins above 80 percent, hundreds of users from seed-stage startups to public companies and a target market of $14 billion a year, half of it spent by early-stage companies filing about 150,000 applications between them.
