One half-point can completely change a bet.
In this short clip from Madden On The Line, host Jo Madden, Vice President of Sports Gaming Media at CrossCheck Media Inc., breaks down the Carolina Panthers vs. Cleveland Browns matchup and explains why getting the right number matters.
Jo liked Cleveland +3, but that number has disappeared with Carolina sitting around a 2.5-point favorite. If you grabbed the Browns at +3, Jo says you've secured valuable closing line value if the market closes at Carolina −2.5.
But should bettors who missed +3 simply take Cleveland +2.5?
Jo says no.
Her reasoning comes down to one of football betting's most important key numbers: 3. With Cleveland +3, a Carolina victory by a field goal results in a push. At +2.5, that same outcome becomes a losing ticket.
Jo still sees reasons to like Cleveland at home, particularly if the Browns defense can contain Bryce Young and the Panthers offense. But she refuses to sacrifice the number simply because she liked the original bet.
The lesson: Don't chase yesterday's line. If the number disappears, sometimes the best bet is to wait.
