America’s AI boom is running into an increasingly powerful obstacle: Americans who don’t want massive data centers built in their communities.
On The Money Path, host Todd M. Schoenberger asks Jim Bianco, President of Bianco Research, whether rising opposition to data centers could eventually slow U.S. AI investment and affect America’s position in the global technology race.
Bianco argues that an important distinction is getting lost. Data centers have supported banking applications, cloud computing, streaming services and countless other digital products for years. While AI is now driving much of the industry's growth, Bianco believes today's backlash also reflects something deeper: public anxiety surrounding AI itself.
His comments come as the issue moves rapidly into the national spotlight. An August 2026 Annenberg survey found 61% of U.S. adults opposed new data centers in their area, while New York has imposed a one-year moratorium on large new data centers amid concerns about electricity costs, water consumption and community impacts. Meanwhile, the EIA expects U.S. electricity consumption to reach record levels in both 2026 and 2027, with AI-intensive data centers contributing to rising demand.
