Psalm 47: The Coronation of the King Who Owns Everything
This is a psalm to be shouted, not whispered. It opens with a command that strikes any reserved worshipper as positively Pentecostal — "O clap your hands, all ye people!" — and then it stays at that pitch all the way through. Picture it: a great crowd, a blast of trumpets, the king ascending to his throne to the sound of a cheer that will not die down. And the startling thing is who the king turns out to be — not a tribal god, not a local deity, but the King of all the earth, before whom every nation is gathered and every shield in the world is laid at his feet. The psalm does not ask us to believe this; it asks us to celebrate it. Somewhere right now the coronation is happening, and the psalmist is nudging us — do you hear the music? Then for heaven's sake, clap.
