Early European archeologists identified the Sumerians as the foundational civilization of ancient Mesopotamia by deciphering cuneiform scripts found at sites like Babylon and Ur. This society evolved from prehistoric farming cultures into the world's first urban centers, such as Eridu and Uruk, where they pioneered writing, mass production, and complex religious hierarchies. Throughout the Early Dynastic Period, rival city-states competed for fertile land until Sargon of Akkad unified the region into a Semitic-led empire. Following a brief Sumerian renaissance under the Third Dynasty of Ur, the civilization eventually collapsed due to foreign migrations and internal instability. While the Sumerian language eventually faded from common use, their technological and cultural innovations provided the essential framework for all subsequent Near Eastern societies.
