En: Amongst this beauty stands Piet, full of hope and a bit nervous.

Af: Vandag is 'n spesiale dag.
En: Today is a special day.

En: It's Heritage Day, and Piet has an idea to impress Annelie with his “knowledge” of plants.

En: She is fond of plants and spends hours reading about them.

En: Piet, on the other hand, quickly skimmed through a few articles last night.

En: He also received a few "tips" from his friend Bekkie, even though they are sometimes questionable.

Af: “Hierso,” sê Piet met selfvertroue, terwyl hy wys na 'n pragtige protea, “dis 'n pragtige tulp.”
En: “Here,” says Piet confidently, as he points to a beautiful protea, “this is a beautiful tulip.”

En: Annelie giggles softly, but Piet doesn't notice.

En: He is too focused on his narration.

En: “That's right,” Bekkie thinks aloud and waves enthusiastically from a short distance away.

En: “It's a unique tulip variety,” he adds with a big smile, hoping Piet can have more confidence.

En: Annelie thanks Bekkie with a smile, but her focus remains on Piet.

Af: Hulle stap verder deur die tuin.
En: They walk further through the garden.

Af: Hier en daar wys Piet na 'n blom en maak dan nog 'n fout.
En: Here and there, Piet points to a flower and makes another mistake.

Af: “Hierdie is 'n Aalwyn, regtig skaars,” sê hy trots terwyl hy na 'n dassie gras wys.
En: “This is an aloe, really rare,” he says proudly while pointing at a tuft of grass.

En: “Yes, of course,” says Annelie with a suppressed laugh, nodding patiently.

Af: Uiteindelik kom hulle weer by 'n ry skouspelagtige proteas aan.
En: Eventually, they come to another row of spectacular proteas.

En: This time, Annelie can't help but correct him.

Af: “Piet, ek moet dit sê, hierdie is proteas, nie tulpe nie.
En: “Piet, I have to say, these are proteas, not tulips.

En: But it's okay!” She smiles kindly, and Piet blushes with embarrassment.

En: “Of course,” says Piet shyly, “I don't know what I was thinking.”

En: He knows well that his "knowledge" of flowers wasn't much.

En: Annelie touches his arm and says: “Thank you for trying.

Af: Ek waardeer die moeite baie.
En: I really appreciate the effort.

En: Let's plan our next outing to the museum.”

En: He realizes then that being genuine and honest is more valuable than trying to impress with false knowledge.

En: They continue walking together, hand in hand, to admire the rest of the garden once more.

Af: En so eindig 'n dag in Kirstenbosch, vol lag en nuwe besef.
En: And so ends a day in Kirstenbosch, full of laughter and new realizations.

En: Piet now understands that the essence of being impressive doesn't always lie in words, but in the effort and sincerity of the heart.
