Massive Worlds, Dying Game Stores & Gaming’s Uncertain Future Ep. 129 — The Level Down Podcast

This week on The Level Down Podcast, we’re breaking down some of the biggest and most concerning stories in gaming right now — from absurdly massive open worlds to the slow death of physical game stores and the permanent loss of online-only games.

🔥 Crimson Desert might be one of the biggest open-world games ever made. Pearl Abyss says the world of Pywel is bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2 and at least double the size of Skyrim. We talk scale, combat, hype, and whether massive open worlds are still exciting… or just exhausting.

🏬 GameStop is shutting down nearly 300 stores to kick off 2026, with more potentially on the chopping block. Employees finding out via signs on the door, customers losing their closest store, and physical games slowly being erased. Are we still going to GameStop? Where are we buying physical games now? Is Amazon part of the problem?

⚰️ Anthem officially shuts down January 12, 2026. Once the servers go dark, the game is gone forever — no offline mode, no preservation. Love it or hate it, Anthem’s shutdown is another reminder of how fragile modern gaming ownership really is.

🎬 Plus, we dip into entertainment and comic book chaos, including:

Damson Idris rumored as the next Black Panther
James Marsden returning as Cyclops
Sebastian Stan reportedly playing Harvey Dent in The Batman Part II
Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Gold
The push for Jeremy Renner as Green Arrow
And wild talk about Melissa Barrera as Wonder Woman

💬 We want YOUR thoughts:

Are massive open-world games still exciting or too bloated?
Are you done with GameStop, or do you still support physical stores?
Should online-only games be allowed to disappear forever?
