This week on The Next Take Podcast, Canada’s own Mikel and Tanyka discuss the real-life story behind The Sound of Music, exploring the true events and remarkable family that inspired one of the most beloved musicals of all time.

Explore the story of Maria Augusta Kutschera, who entered the von Trapp household in 1926 as a tutor for one of Georg von Trapp’s children—not as governess to all seven. Maria and Georg married in 1927, more than a decade before the family left Austria following the Nazi annexation in 1938. The real family also consisted of 10 children, and Captain Georg von Trapp was reportedly a much warmer and more supportive father than his strict Hollywood portrayal suggests.

From the family's financial struggles and rise as professional singers to their decision to leave Austria and eventually build a new life in the United States, we separate Hollywood fiction from historical fact and examine the extraordinary family whose experiences inspired one of cinema’s most famous musicals.
