This week on Next Take Podcast, Canada's own Mikel and Tanyka discuss the tragic story of the Upstairs Lounge as part of their Second Annual Pride Month Series.
The UpStairs Lounge, a gathering place for New Orleans’ LGBTQ+ community that became the site of one of the deadliest fires in the city’s history. On June 24, 1973, a fire tore through the second-floor lounge in New Orleans’ French Quarter, killing 32 people. The tragedy devastated the local LGBTQ+ community and exposed the discrimination many gay and lesbian Americans faced at the time. Despite evidence that the fire was deliberately set, no one was ever convicted, and the case remains officially unsolved.
