Most people see DC Comics’ December 2026 solicitations and see momentum.

I see a test.

DC has spent 2026 building attention with the Absolute Universe, major creative teams, returning fan-favorite creators, and a growing slate of books. But getting someone to buy a comic once is not the same thing as turning that person into a recurring reader.

So the real question heading into 2027 is: Is DC building new readers, or just selling 2026’s momentum?

In this video, I break down what DC’s December 2026 solicitations actually tell us about the comic book industry heading into 2027, why the difference between attention, first purchase, second purchase, and long-term retention matters, and why Marvel’s emerging strategy for creating new entry points could become increasingly important.

The December lineup includes major creative reunions, holiday specials, continuing series, the Absolute Universe, and plenty of reasons for existing comic readers to pay attention. But the bigger industry question is what happens after December.

Because the first issue measures curiosity.

The later issues measure commitment.

And that means Q1 2027 may be much more important than December 2026.

If you're interested in DC Comics, Marvel Comics, comic books, comic book news, the comic book industry, comic sales, the Direct Market, the Absolute Universe, and where the comics market is heading in 2027, this is the bigger-picture analysis.
