Human Connection in Leadership: How to Make People Feel Valued

Guest: Michelle Warner

Episode Overview

In an increasingly automated and transactional world, human connection has become a powerful differentiator. Human connection expert Michelle Warner explains how leaders and businesses can turn caring into practical actions that make employees, customers, and families feel seen, heard, and valued.

Drawing on lessons from her childhood, military nursing, corporate leadership, and work across 37 countries, Michelle introduces the idea of “love deposits” and “pain deposits”—the emotional impact every interaction leaves behind. She also shares how the Platinum Rule, thoughtful customer service, and smart use of AI can create stronger workplace cultures, deeper relationships, and memorable customer experiences.

Key Takeaways

• Every interaction leaves a deposit. Love deposits help people feel seen, valued, capable, and safe; pain deposits can leave them depleted or ignored.
• Small actions create meaningful connection. Remembering a name, listening without rushing, offering help, or respecting someone’s time can have an outsized impact.
• Use the Platinum Rule. Instead of treating people how you want to be treated, learn how they want to be treated.
• AI should create space for humanity. Use automation for efficiency and administrative work so employees have more time for meaningful human interaction.
• Customer experience starts with leadership. Leaders can build cultures where employees are empowered to care for customers in personal, memorable ways.

Listener Q&A

What is a “love deposit”?

It’s an interaction that leaves another person feeling seen, valued, supported, or capable. It can be as simple as remembering their name, listening attentively, or offering help.

What is a “pain deposit”?

It’s an interaction or process that makes someone feel ignored, depleted, frustrated, or unimportant—such as being repeatedly transferred by customer service without getting a problem solved.

What is the Platinum Rule?

Michelle describes it as treating others the way they want to be treated, rather than assuming everyone wants the same experience you do.

Can AI improve human connection?

Yes. Michelle recommends letting AI handle tasks it does well—such as efficiency, personalization, and administrative work—while freeing employees to spend more time creating genuine human experiences.
