A new workgroup will be placing the Madison Police Department’s policies and procedures under the microscope, as the city council weighs its response to the police killing of Corey Ruiz in July. The workgroup has just over six months to review the department’s use of deadly force, de-escalation, and body-worn camera policies, and report back with recommendations.
Alder Sabrina Madison, who created the workgroup through a presidential order, joined our News Producer Faye Parks this afternoon to share more details about its mission. She says the workgroup is an opportunity for city leaders to work with the community, identify the most promising recommendations from several years’ worth of reports, and turn them into actual legislation that improves the police department’s level of service.
