The numbers are jaw dropping - just out from the Institute for Policy Studies are this year’s figures about the low wage 100 - companies that have the highest pay gap between the CEO and the average worker. And many of these companies are household names, like Amazon, Door Dash and Walmart. Her Turn reporter Arlene Zaucha talks with Reyanna Janes, research assistant working on issues of income inequality at the Institute for Policy Studies and one of the authors of this year’s study.
According to James, we are in the midst of an inequality crisis. There’s a huge irony in how many workers are on food stamps, even while working full time. For example, the report cites Walmart - a company that has generated eight living billionaires, more than any Low Wage 100 firm. Walmart ranks first with the most workers enrolled in Medicaid and SNAP. And it will come as no surprise which workers are affected the most - women and people of color and immigrant workers.
The rich can buy political power, says James, but she sees a reckoning coming because of this extreme wealth concentration. According to James, it’s going to take political will on all our parts. She discusses some of the solutions.
