在2006年，科學家正式將「冥王星」從9大行星的名單上除名，成為天文學領域中最具爭議的事件之一。至於為什麼會被除名呢?
原因是因為冥王星並沒有符合行星的第3項條件。現在我們的太陽系當中只剩下八大行星，分別是水星Mercury、金星Venus、地球Earth、火星Mars、木星Jupiter、土星Saturn、天王星Uranus和海王星Neptune，在天文領域中，要成為一個行星必需滿足1.運行的軌道環繞太陽運轉，2.體積得要夠大、夠重，足以形成圓球狀3.軌道上不能有其他物體並行。可惜我們的冥王星並不符合第3項，在它運行的軌道上有時候會與比它大很多的海王星重疊，因此冥王星才不再屬於大行星，而是被歸納為與許多小的星體並列的「矮行星」。
