STRAT | 14 AUG 26 | Drones Across The Homeland — STRAT

Drones are transforming the security landscape across the American homeland, creating opportunities for first responders while introducing rapidly evolving threats to military installations, critical infrastructure, public safety, major venues, and communities. This STRAT episode examines warnings from U.S. Northern Command and NORAD leaders that existing sensor and interception capabilities may not be sufficient to confront modern drone swarms launched from within U.S. territory. Host Hal Kempfer explores lessons from Ukraine, the disruption unauthorized drones can cause during wildfire operations, and their growing use by criminal smuggling networks. It also examines the expansion of Drone as First Responder programs, which can provide emergency personnel with valuable situational awareness before crews arrive. From terrorism and espionage to public safety and emergency response, drones are reshaping risk assessment. The central message is urgent: governments, infrastructure operators, security professionals, and major venues must develop dynamic counter-UAS plans before the next major incident occurs on American soil.
