Once-thriving towns can disappear for all kinds of reasons. Gold runs out, industries collapse, disasters strike, and sometimes, people are simply forced to leave. But even after the residents are gone, pieces of these places- and the stories of the people who once called them home- can remain.
For this Sunday Scary, we’re traveling across the United States to explore several ghost towns frozen in time, from abandoned mining communities and former capitals to one town where the ground beneath it has been burning for decades. And while some have become popular places to explore today, a few may look surprisingly familiar, having inspired settings in movies and video games.
