On Sept. 9, 1739, a group of enslaved Black people led by an enslaved man named Jemmy seized weapons and marched toward Spanish Florida in pursuit of freedom. The Stono Rebellion became one of the largest uprisings of enslaved people in Britain's mainland North American colonies and led South Carolina to impose stricter controls on enslaved people.
