Kayla Calls Seth and Jessi to sing a G ballad

KAYLA CALLS SETH & JESSI TO SING A BALLAD IN G
(by Silvio Vinci)

Kayla called at half past nine,
“Come on over, stay a while.”
Seth came in with his guitar,
Jessi with a weary smile.

Coats were draped across the chairs,
There were things we couldn’t say.
Then a chord broke through the quiet,
And we let it lead the way.

Leave a little light for me,
Let your voice come close to mine.
If the words won’t come tonight,
We can take them one at a time.

Let the last note fill the room,
We don’t have to get it right.
Leave a little light for me,
Stay and sing into the night.

Jessi sang the second line,
Seth came in a beat too soon.
Kayla laughed and missed her cue,
But the song still filled the room.

All the things we couldn’t fix,
All the weight we’d brought inside,
For a moment felt much lighter
With our voices side by side.

No one asked what had gone wrong,
No one said we should be strong.
We just moved a little closer
When the evening felt too long.

Leave a little light for me,
Let your voice come close to mine.
Now the words are coming slowly,
We can take them one at a time.

Let the last note fill the room,
We don’t have to get it right.
Leave a little light for me,
Stay and sing into the night.

At the door, she held us back:
“Sing that last one once again.”
Seth sat down and struck a chord,
Jessi counted us back in.

One at a time…
One at a time…
Let your voice come close to mine.
Leave a little light for me…
