Nothing Else

NOTHING ELSE
Silvio Vinci

Your coat is on the kitchen chair,
you said you wouldn’t stay.
The coffee’s cold; you leave it there,
I put my phone away.

We used to fill
this room with plans.
Now all I want
is where I am.

Let the whole world talk,
let it wear itself out.
Come a little closer,
we can turn it down.

No more grand designs,
no one to impress.
Your hand resting in mine—
I need nothing else.

You ask about the things I kept;
I point towards the hall.
Your records and that crooked shelf
I never fixed at all.

You laugh the way you used to laugh;
I almost say too much.
Then something in the room lets go
before our fingers touch.

Let the whole world talk,
let it wear itself out.
Come a little closer,
we can turn it down.

No more grand designs,
no one to impress.
Your hand resting in mine—
I need nothing else.

There’s a bus at half past ten.
You don’t ask me for the time.
I don’t ask you where this ends.
You move your glass next to mine.

For a little while…
nothing else.
