October (Stay Until the Light Is Gone)

OCTOBER

The light came down
across the room,
a quiet gold
in the afternoon.

October moved
along the street,
through open doors
and fallen leaves.

I heard your voice
somewhere behind,
or maybe it was
only mine.

Stay until the light is gone,
stay until the evening comes.
We don’t need to understand
what we couldn’t hold
inside our hands.

The river carried
another sky,
clouds went slowly
drifting by.

Your empty cup,
the window rain,
a little warmth
that still remains.

October turned
the trees to flame,
then took the colours
back again.

Stay until the light is gone,
stay until the evening comes.
Leave the words we never said,
let them wander
through our heads.

Somewhere
a radio plays,
some old forgotten song.

For a moment
I could swear
you were singing along.

Stay until the light is gone,
stay until the evening comes.
Nothing ever really stays,
but something always
finds its way.

October rain
against the glass…

and all the summer
in the past.
