DRAFT BETTER: Pittsburgh Pirates Must CONFRONT Rising Costs for Paul Skenes, Oneil Cruz & Roster

Pittsburgh Pirates brace for rising costs as stars like Paul Skenes and Oneil Cruz face hefty arbitration projections. Are payroll concerns truly holding the franchise back, or is draft and development prowess the real difference-maker for small market teams?

The conversation focused on the Pirates’ upcoming roster crunch, dissecting how organizational philosophy—under Neil Huntington and now Ben Cherington—has shaped player acquisition. Key themes include the impact of arbitration on the NL Central landscape, the importance of scouting and development over payroll, and how minor league free agency decisions, like retaining Noah Murdock and Beau Burrows, reveal Pittsburgh’s priorities. The discussion explored whether swinging for high-ceiling talent will finally set the Pirates apart, and what it takes to maintain a sustainable roster when young cores grow older—and more expensive. Will Pittsburgh’s shifting approach produce the difference-makers they desperately need?
