As the United States prepares to swear in a new president, Catholic Review Editor Christopher Gunty takes a look at the state of politics and elections. His first guest is Peter Sonski, who was the American Solidarity Party nominee for president in 2024. Sonski talks about how his party’s platform is more fully aligned with the spectrum of Catholic social teaching than the two main parties, and how difficult it is for third-party candidates to get on the ballot. The guest in the second segment is Michael Towle, a political science professor at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, who talks further about third-party runs, the Electoral College system and how Catholics can make a difference in elections.
