Cultural Shifts in Audit: from Tokyo to Amsterdam, with Kunihiko Kitsu
What happens when you spend 11 years at a Big Four firm in Tokyo and then transition to the Amsterdam office? In the latest episode of BusySeasonTalks, Kunihiko Kitsu joins us to share his insights. Together with hosts Tristan and Jeffrey, he reflects on his past two years working as an auditor in the Dutch financial services sector.
In a grounded and open conversation, we dive into the most striking differences between Japanese and Dutch corporate cultures:
Work-Life balance: while the traditional Japanese approach places a strong emphasis on the collective workload, the Dutch rush hour on a Friday afternoon often hints at an early start to the weekend.
Directness and hierarchy: how does an international manager navigate the famous 'Dutch directness' and a flatter hierarchy where a first-year staff member comfortably approaches a manager with questions?
Documentation vs. efficiency: why the meticulous Japanese documentation style provides a head start during the planning phase, whereas Dutch ownership and judgment calls drive daily efficiency.
Kunihiko also gives a valuable piece of advice for young finance professionals: embrace diversity and consider working abroad to broaden your perspective and elevate your career.
