An autistic meltdown can feel as though it came out of nowhere. Often, there are signs that things are becoming too much. The challenge is noticing them when you’re already overwhelmed.
In this episode, we explore three possible early warning signs: sensory input feeling harder to tolerate, finding it more difficult to speak or process what people are saying, and feeling a rising need to leave the situation. Your signs may be different, but recognising your own patterns can help you ask for space or support sooner.
If you’re an autistic adult, searching for information about Asperger’s syndrome and meltdowns, or supporting someone who experiences sensory overload, this episode offers a starting point for understanding what happens before a meltdown.
