Our text today is 2 Peter 2:10b-12:

Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord. But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction — 2 Peter 2:10b-12

False teachers often seem impressive because they sound certain. They will be bold, willful, and willing to speak confidently about matters they do not understand.

But confidence does not make something true.

These teachers had a lot of opinions but little humility. They spoke carelessly about spiritual things while refusing to recognize the limits of their own understanding. Note that even angels, who possess greater power, showed more restraint than an arrogant teacher.

Peter's warning is blunt: spiritual arrogance eventually becomes spiritually destructive. How many Christian teachers can you describe this way? The list is long.

I have learned that I am especially vulnerable to a forceful voice when that person is saying something I already want to believe. Confidence feels like confirmation to me. But a loud voice and a passionate delivery do not prove someone is handling God's truth faithfully.

That's because true spiritual authority remains under God's authority. And you can sense it.

A faithful teacher does not reshape Scripture to support personal opinions. He studies carefully, speaks plainly, invites correction, and admits when the Bible does not give every answer we want.

Humility does not mean that a teacher lacks conviction. It means our convictions remain submitted to God's Word, and our pride submits to it.

This warning also applies to all of us. I have seen believers repeat claims they have never verified or attack people while convincing themselves they are defending truth. But before speaking, posting, or sharing, we should pause and ask:

  1. Have I examined what Scripture actually says?
  2. Am I speaking with humility?
  3. Am I trying to honor Christ or prove that I am right?

Certainty without submission is not spiritual maturity. It is arrogance. So submit your opinions to Scripture, and speak Scripture with humility.

DO THIS:

Before repeating a strong spiritual claim today, find the passage being referenced and read it in context. Then ask: Am I submitting my opinion to Scripture, or using Scripture to support my opinion?

ASK THIS:
  1. Why can confidence be mistaken for spiritual authority?
  2. When are you most tempted to speak beyond what you truly understand?
  3. How can you hold strong biblical convictions while remaining humble and teachable?
PRAY THIS:

Jesus, make me humble, teachable, and careful with my words so that every conviction I hold remains submitted to your truth. Amen
