Nate Glubish, Alberta’s Minister of Technology and Innovation, makes the case for why the province can become Canada’s “compute capital” without sacrificing grid reliability, affordable power, or water. He explains what comes next now that the first 1,200 megawatts of grid capacity for data centres is effectively spoken for—and responds to concerns that new large-load demand could squeeze existing industries or simply shift the bottleneck from electricity to natural gas. Then we zoom out: if Alberta becomes home to much of Canada’s AI infrastructure, could “compute security” give the province the same kind of strategic importance—and leverage—as its energy resources?
