 למרבה ההפתעה, בדיקת סקר שתיאורטית הייתה אמורה לזהות את סרטן השחלה בשלב מוקדם ולאפשר טיפול טוב יותר לא הביאה לירידה בתמותה מהמחלה. במצב כזה יש להתייחס לשלושת נזקי בדיקות הסקר: אבחון יתר, בדיקות חיוביות כוזבות, ועומס על המטופלת עם מחיר ההזדמנות.
