Big 12 is Open for Business to Add LSU, While Utah Leaving to Join SEC is Very Much On Table

the SEC cutting ties with LSU amid their explosive roster-eligibility legal war—and the Big 12 aggressively swooping in to absorb a displaced college football titan while Utah backfills the SEC—rewrites the entire map of major college athletics.

1. The Big 12 Plays Aggressive Super-Conference Poaching

For Brett Yormark and the Big 12, landing a blue-blood brand like LSU wouldn't just be an expansion win; it would be a seismic power play.

• The Brand Synergy: The Big 12 has systematically positioned itself as the high-velocity, chaotic, basketball-and-football powerhouse of the modern era. Adding a SEC defector like LSU instantly elevates the conference’s national TV profile, recruiting footprint in the fertile soil of Louisiana, and playoff leverage.
• The Ideological Fit: If LSU is being cast out of the SEC for pushing the envelope on roster building, professional integration, and institutional autonomy, they would find a kindred spirit in a Big 12 that thrives on disruption and challenger-brand energy.

2. Utah Backfills the SEC Pipeline

If a vacancy opens up in the Southeast’s premier club, sliding Utah into the SEC represents a fascinating stylistic and cultural transition.

• The Kyle Whittingham Blueprint: The SEC prides itself on physical trench warfare, defensive discipline, and old-school, ground-and-pound football. Utah doesn't flinch at that identity; in fact, they wrote the manual for it in the Pac-12.
• Geographic Realignment Chaos: While Salt Lake City is a geographic outlier for the map-shattered SEC, television networks and conference power brokers long ago stopped caring about regional lines in favor of brand value and market capture. Utah entering the SEC gives the conference a fiercely loyal, incredibly well-coached program that respects the brutality of line-of-scrimmage football.

3. The Institutional Aftershocks

A divorce of this magnitude between a founding member and a historic conference would shatter whatever remains of traditional conference loyalty. It would prove that in the multi-billion-dollar super-conference era, institutional survival and legal compliance trump a century of regional tradition.
