Pete Golding Is Running A Three Year Defense With One Year Players | Ole Miss Bye Week

Everybody watching Saturday decided the Ole Miss defense got exposed. That's the wrong read. Ole Miss has an All-Big 12 linebacker who is more athletic than anything on last year's roster and he was late getting sideline to sideline all afternoon — and the theory on this show is that the problem is not talent or effort, it is that Pete Golding is running a Nick Saban match-coverage system that takes three years to learn, in an era where eight of your eleven starters arrived in January. John Fourcade agreed, and then told us exactly what he would do with the two weeks.

📌 THREE THINGS

1. The theory: Golding's defense is a Saban inheritance, and Saban's version needed a redshirt year, a learning year and a playing year. The portal does not give you three years. It gives you one, and this defense turned over most of a starting eleven. Fourcade's answer was immediate — every arrival has to unlearn a scheme first, and what hits them in the SEC is not receiver speed but how fast the linemen play.

2. The proposal is extreme simplification. Base man-to-man against Vanderbilt, roughly five calls, no if-this-then-that. Fourcade pushed back honestly: man is the hardest thing to play, a scramble breaks every route you studied, and it only works if the front and the linebackers help. But he agreed on the principle — you find out what these athletes are before Texas, not after.

3. Fourcade's bye-week list, in order: confirm who is healthy, then tackling, then reps for the backups. He was blunt about the diving at feet — "that's just laziness" — blunter about the mechanism nobody says aloud: starters don't get benched because a booster is paying them, so the only lever left is showing a starter his backup taking his reps.
