Familiar Trends Fail Sabres In Opener (Instant Live Reaction)

The Buffalo Sabres opened their season with a frustrating 6-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Patrick Moran is joined by Chris Ostrander of Two in the Box for an instant reaction on this episode of Talking Buffalo.

Patrick and Chris break down a night where some of the Sabres' biggest concerns from last season resurfaced immediately. Buffalo went 0-for-5 on the power play, failed to capitalize on an extended 5-on-3 opportunity and struggled on the penalty kill. Was this simply one bad night, or were there legitimate warning signs?

They discuss the Sabres' special teams, the performance of Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Buffalo's blue line and some encouraging performances from the team's young players. Noah Ostlund and Konsta Helenius provide reasons for optimism, while Jack Quinn finds the back of the net and nearly adds another.

Patrick and Chris also react to the physical confrontation involving Zach Metsa and Mathieu Olivier, Tage Thompson's season debut and whether Buffalo could turn to Colten Ellis in goal sooner rather than later.

The show closes with some Buffalo Bills talk as Patrick and Chris look ahead to a significant Bills vs. Patriots AFC East matchup, Buffalo's 3-0 start, the emergence of Greg Rousseau and the opportunity for the Bills to create early separation inside the division.

Key Takeaways

• Special teams remain a major concern: Buffalo's power play finished 0-for-5, while Columbus capitalized on its opportunities and won the special-teams battle.
• UPL's consistency is under the microscope: Luukkonen allowed five goals on 22 shots, prompting discussion about Buffalo's goaltending rotation and a potential opportunity for Colten Ellis.
• The Sabres' young players provided optimism: Noah Ostlund, Konsta Helenius and Jack Quinn were among the encouraging individual performances despite the loss.
• Buffalo's defense had an uneven opener: Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power had positive moments, but the group as a whole wasn't consistently impactful.
• The Bills have a major early-season opportunity: Buffalo can strengthen its position in the AFC East with a home win against New England.
