Bills Training Camp Preview: Breakout Candidates, Roster Battles & Camp Darlings — Talking Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills’ offseason is officially over, and training camp has arrived. Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of Buffalo Rumblings and SB Nation for an extensive preview of the biggest players, competitions and storylines to follow at St. John Fisher University.

Patrick and Matt begin with their unfiltered reactions to Buffalo’s new “Nickel City” alternate uniforms before discussing why a blockbuster trade for Tampa Bay defensive tackle Vita Vea sounds much better on paper than it would work financially.

They also debate Keon Coleman’s remaining breakout potential, identify possible surprise roster cuts and examine how Buffalo’s defense could change under Jim Leonhard. Other topics include Michael Hoecht’s recovery, the backup quarterback battle, Tyler Bass, the punt-return competition and realistic expectations for rookie pass rusher T.J. Parker.

The episode concludes with predictions for Buffalo’s 2026 training-camp darlings, including Max Hairston, Skyler Bell and Zane Durant.

Key Takeaways

Keon Coleman still has breakout ability, but the addition of DJ Moore and Coleman’s previous inconsistency make his path to a major offensive role more difficult.
A trade for Vita Vea would immediately strengthen Buffalo’s defensive front, but the acquisition cost, contract extension and Ed Oliver’s existing deal make it highly unlikely.
Buffalo’s new defense may be the most fascinating part of camp. Jim Leonhard could mix three- and four-man fronts while finding versatile roles for players such as C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Jordan Hancock and Jalen Kilgore.
T.J. Sanders entering camp as a starter and Michael Hoecht’s recovery from a torn Achilles are two important defensive storylines that may not be receiving enough attention.
Several camp narratives—including the punter competition, Tyler Bass’ return, punt-return reps and the QB2 battle between Kyle Allen and Shane Buechele—could receive more attention than they ultimately deserve.
Rookie pass rusher T.J. Parker may struggle during one-on-one drills as he experiments with new techniques, but those growing pains should not be viewed as proof that he cannot contribute immediately.
Patrick’s projected camp darlings are Max Hairston, Skyler Bell and Zane Durant, while Matt highlights Cole Bishop, DeWayne Carter and Buffalo’s veteran receivers as additional possibilities.
