Bills Post-Film Takeaways: Stars, Surprises & Concerns — Talking Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills opened their season with a huge 36-31 road victory over the Houston Texans, and Patrick Moran went back through the All-22 film to see what stood out beyond the box score.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick shares his biggest post-film takeaways from the win, including an impressive offensive adjustment from Joe Brady, a dominant performance from Deone Walker, a drastically different approach to the defensive line rotation and one Bills veteran emerging as an unsung hero.

Patrick discusses Buffalo's heavy use of 13 personnel, with three tight ends on the field for more than a third of the offensive snaps. After Houston's pass rush caused major problems for Buffalo previously, Joe Brady came back with a much different plan designed to give Josh Allen additional protection while keeping the Texans defense guessing.

On defense, Deone Walker looked every bit like a potential emerging star, while Greg Rousseau, Ed Oliver and Bradley Chubb were among the defensive linemen receiving significantly larger snap shares. Patrick explains why the old defensive-line rotation may be a thing of the past.

Also discussed is Spencer Brown's outstanding work against Danielle Hunter, concerns with Buffalo's dime defense and Damar Hamlin's role, Christian Benford and Dee Alford's struggles, quiet debuts from several Bills rookies and encouraging performances from Terrel Bernard and Maxwell Hairston.

Plus, why Josh Palmer's box score doesn't come close to telling the story of his debut, James Cook's recent fumbling trend bears watching, and how a couple of fortunate breaks helped Buffalo escape Houston with a massive road victory.

Key Takeaways

Joe Brady's heavy use of three-tight-end personnel was one of Buffalo's biggest tactical adjustments against Houston's dangerous pass rush.
Deone Walker's combination of power, disruption and increased playing time strengthened the case that he's developing into a potential star.
Buffalo leaned much more heavily on its top defensive linemen instead of constantly rotating players, with Rousseau, Oliver and Chubb all receiving substantial workloads.
Spencer Brown deserves significant credit for helping neutralize Danielle Hunter and Houston's edge pressure.
Buffalo's secondary and dime package produced some concerns, but there were also encouraging signs from Bernard and Hairston.
