Why the Supreme Court ruling against Donald Trump is good news

The Supreme Court’s decision to leave a $5 million judgment against President Trump in place offers a striking example of the checks and balances America’s founders designed to prevent any one leader from becoming too powerful. Yet while the system may be working as intended, Americans’ trust in government, churches, businesses, and other institutions continues to erode. The tension points to a deeper problem the founders themselves understood: democracy depends on people who are capable of governing themselves. What does that require from people naturally inclined to seek power, status, and authority?
